An RTI query
by a Haldwani-based activist revealed that Jal Sansthan, an agency responsible
for ensuring smooth water supply, has over Rs 22 crore pending bills with
13,598 consumers in Haldwani city.
The list of
consumers also includes various government departments such as forest
department, irrigation department and forest development corporation.
Jal Sansthan
executive engineer Santosh Kumar Upadhyay told TOI, “We have constituted teams
to collect the pending payments. Notices have been sent to almost all the
defaulting consumers. If they fail to comply with the payment, we will cut
their connections, including the government departments.”
Haldwani
grapples with water shortage every year, especially during the summer months.
Activist
Hemant Gauniya said, “If this is the situation in Haldwani, the condition of
the entire state will be worse.”
