of India: Mumbai: Friday, 19 December 2014.
The Bombay
high court on Thursday directed the state government to reply to a petition
which questions why the first vice-chancellor of Maharashtra National Law
University at Mumbai was appointed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and not
by the state government.
The
petitioners' advocates, Srihari Aney and Uday Warunjikar, told the court that
documents received under RTI Act show that the government was unaware of B P
Panda's appointment. On August 29, the CJI approved Panda's appointment as VC.
The
government's advocate, Vishal Thadani, said that a search committee had held
interviews. The HC has sought the advocate general's assistance at the next
hearing on December 23.
